MYTHS ABOUT GIFTEDNESS

"No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings."

Friedrich Nietzsche

Giftedness is often equated--incorrectly-- with "smart" or "bright."  People assume that giftedness is defined by an IQ score.

We typically expect those who have accelerated brains to excel in all subjects and skills.  Because of this assumption, we then believe that gifted individuals do not need special support; we think they can figure out on their own what they need.

Another mistaken idea we have is that people who are gifted "have it made" for becoming successful.

The chart to the right lays out these and other myths.  Have you believed any of these?  Are some new to you?
